Project Description
Removal of Toilet Unit, in Queens St, Swindon
As part of the ongoing programme to remove APT toilet units from various locations in the UK, Twenty Twelve Civils were tasked with removing this unit in Queens Street, Swindon.
A pedestrianised walkway, enclosed by buildings on both sides and with bollards, lamp columns and established trees at both ends.
Due to the restricted nature of the site, Queens street was temporarily closed and several bollards removed to permit access for a low loader to detach a trailer unit next to the toilet and leave site.
A 60-tonne mobile crane was then able to enter the site immediately ahead of the 12-tonne toilet unit and ‘rig’ to carry out the lift.
On the previous day the Twenty Twelve Civils field team had excavated around and beneath the toilet, to disconnect all services and to prepare the unit for lifting.
Once the APT was lifted onto the waiting trailer the mobile crane was ‘de-rigged’, allowing the tractor unit of the low loader to re-hitch the loaded trailer.
When both the mobile crane and low loader had left site, Twenty Twelve’s field team were able to reinstate the toilet foundation and to lay a new wearing course.
A big thank is due to Ainscough Crane Hire and Frank Ratcliffe & Sons for the professional way in which they carried out their work.
